Acciona Energía has completed the 246 MW El Romero solar plant in record time, says general manager José Escobar. Located in the Atacama desert of Chile, the US$343 million plant is the largest in Latin America, featuring 776,000 polycrystalline silicon PV modules that are spread over a 280 hectare area.

The plant is designed to generate 505 GWh of solar power per year, in order to meet the electricity demand for 245,000 Chilean homes. Acciona will supply 600 GWh of power to distribution concession holders in the Central Interconnected System (SIC) from 2018. Additionally, Acciona plans to negotiate private purchase and sale contracts for the electricity produced in other renewables projects currently under construction in Chile.
