Columbia’s new Vice Minister for the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Rutty Paola Ortiz, will be responsible for leading a review of the country’s new electrical institutions to ensure energy security continues to improve. Vice Minister Ortiz will confront major challenges facing the oil sector and maintain progress on the governmental PaZa La Corriente program. A goal of the program is to bring power to 150,000 homes over the next three years, and 173,000 households in four years, in “the most remote and poorest areas in the country”, said Ortiz. She will oversee matters related to electricity and hydrocarbons with a priority placed on improvements to Colombia’s generation capacity. The initiative is designed to improve electricity in places where the ongoing conflict with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has made delivery difficult. Included in the plan are the communities of Chocó, La Guajira, Putumayo, and departments in the Amazon. The new Vice Minister plans to help strengthen energy sector institutions and contribute “to regional development and the competitiveness of the country.”
