Despite initial setbacks, a new 12 MW wind farm will soon begin construction in St. Lucia. Although the grid can presently accommodate 45 MW and the Renewable Energy Rider (RER) program has not reached full capacity, progress is slow as feasibility studies are carried out. Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) will construct the wind farm and plans to go “full scale” with various types of renewable energy. The solar sector, in particular, has room for both distributed solutions and utility scale systems, and the company hopes to form partnerships with the agriculture sector. Complexities and an environmental impact assessment have slowed the wind project, which plans to distribute 15 percent less energy to customers because of its small size. BL&P plans to look into new technologies that it may adapt going forward.
