GIZ validates solar-hydrogen pilot system at Chilean Antarctic research base

A pilot renewable energy and hydrogen system has been validated at Chile’s Professor Julio Escudero Scientific Base on King George Island, aiming to reduce diesel use in extreme Antarctic conditions. The project, led by Germany’s GIZ under the EU-backed Team Europe Renewable Hydrogen initiative, combines a 27 kW solar PV system, batteries, and a small hydrogen production and fuel cell setup. The system will produce hydrogen via electrolysis powered by renewables, store it in tanks, and use PEM fuel cells to provide backup electricity for critical laboratory operations.
