Panama to launch renewable energy auctions under new 2050 power sector plan

Panama will relaunch national energy planning in 2026 with the National Energy Plan 2025–2050, introducing competitive renewable energy auctions as part of a long-term power sector roadmap through 2050. A four-year auction schedule will begin with hydropower and wind, followed by additional technologies, alongside regulatory reforms, grid integration and efforts to reduce fossil fuel dependence. The strategy also prioritizes improved service quality, universal electrification and emissions reductions through distributed generation, rural electrification and electric mobility initiatives.
