IDB Approves US$250 million loan to restore Guatemala’s Motagua River Basin

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$250 million loan to support environmental restoration and improved living conditions in Guatemala’s Motagua River Basin. The program will expand waste collection, sanitation, and effluent treatment while strengthening water monitoring and local service management. It is expected to benefit nearly 400,000 households, promote a circular economy, create formal jobs for recyclers—especially women—and help address pollution challenges that also affect neighboring Honduras.
