The Government of Antigua and Barbuda hopes to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels through the construction of a 3 MW solar PV farm. Last February, the government approved the Renewable Energy Act as part of a wider effort by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to “update the regulatory structures for energy within the sub-region”.
Announced this past Tuesday, the project is part of a larger 10 MW renewables initiative that will supply electricity to the airport, a hospital and government offices – according to a release published on the CARICOM website. The new plant will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electricity costs, Tourism and Economic Development Minister Asot Michael said.
