El Niño puts Colombia on the edge of an energy crisis

This year’s El Niño have put Colombia at the edge of an energy crisis.

Damage to one of the country’s largest hydroelectric dams and unseasonable droughts, which provides nearly 10% of Colombia’s energy, increased the gravity of the crisis.

Colombia’s Mining and Energy Ministry proposed a bill to provide financial incentives for each kw of energy saved by households that are able to reduce their consumption, and penalties for those who use more energy. This program comes on top of energy rationing, which is in place during peak hours of 6 – 9 pm.
