UAE-Caribbean renewables fund opens first application cycle

The UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund, announced last month at the IRENA General Assembly, has released guidelines and officially opened applications for the first cycle of funding.

The government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is supporting renewable energy projects in Caribbean islands through $50m in grants, with two key objectives:

  1. Increase the use and resilience of renewable energy applications in the region, per national development and energy plans (includes water and waste sectors)
  2. Expand technical experience in designing, implementing, and managing renewable energy projects, to facilitate faster and lower-cost deployment in the future.

The fund will prioritize solar, wind, waste-to-energy, geothermal and hydropower, and is primarily intended for new capacity. Distribution and transmission systems may be considered if tied to generation projects.

This application cycle will close June 2017, with cooperation agreements to be signed no later than November 2017. A second application cycle is expected to follow, though dates have not yet been announced.
