Trinidad and Tobago’s election will have implications for its future energy policy

As the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago head to the polls, they are “largely uninformed of a worsening economic outlook.” Aside from the social issues (mainly drug trafficking) and infrastructure development, the largest issue affecting Trinidad and Tobago’s election surrounds its energy future and future energy policy. Long blessed with abundant natural resources, Trinidad and Tobago is taking a hit as domestic oil production and global prices drop. “In the last 15 years, oil production has steadily declined from 215,000 barrels daily to 81,000.” Further, their budgets were based on oil prices at $80 a barrel, which is currently trading in the mid $40s. With a worsening current account, and an economy on the verge of recession, now may be the time for Trinidad and Tobago to invest in renewable energy infrastructure. future energy policy
