Think GeoEnergy on small-scale geothermal

Small-scale geothermal projects in the Caribbean have the potential to to speed up development in the industry and drive growth in related industries across the region. Geothermal is often associated with utility-scale projects due to the risks associated with feasibility of development. Small-scale projects may provide off-grid solutions for isolated areas and island grids. The option for off-grid generation reduces concerns arising from resource risk, economic viability, feed-in-tariffs, and most importantly, power transmission. Although the demand for off-grid electricity is small, the potential for impact is huge, not only for providing green electricity but also affordable electricity to these Island states. Small-scale has often been overlooked by both developers and development banks; some Caribbean projects have survived while those in the Pacific have been shut down. Not enough attention has been paid to small-scale geothermal to create the necessary push for development. Industry developers and partners in finance should pay more attention to the possibilities for off-grid generation and the future of geothermal power.
