Amal-Lee is Chief of the Climate Change and Sustainability Division at the Inter-American Development Bank, where she manages an extensive portfolio of climate change adaptation, mitigation and knowledge activities for all of Latin America and the Caribbean. Her return in August 2015 follows a previous two year role leading on design and implementation of the Climate Investment Funds from 2008 – 2010.
Previously Amal-Lee was Associate Director at E3G leading a programme on international climate finance. In-country work focused on design and implementation of financing strategies for low carbon and resilient development in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Work in China led to launch of a Dialogue on China’s Green Finance Pathway to 2030 which is being co-chaired by senior representatives of the National Development Research Council, the Ministry of Finance and the People’s Bank of China. International work included serving as a member of the Private Sector Advisor Group to the Green Climate Fund; co-facilitator of the OECD DAC task team on the Rio Markers for tracking environmental finance and advising Governments, the UNFCCC and private sector initiatives on use of climate finance for mobilising long-term investment.
From 2001 – 2011 Amal-Lee worked at the heart of Government developing UK and EU policy on climate and sustainable energy. Achievements include the design of a new Green Investment Bank for the UK, developing strategy for negotiations under the UNFCCC, UNGA and Rio+10 and pioneering several high profile initiatives for increased UK and EU cooperation with developing countries on climate technology and finance.
Amal-Lee’s PhD, which focused on policies and institutions for increasing investment in renewable energy in developing countries, has been central to her 15 year professional career.
