SolarPack sees Chile’s low renewable energy prices here to stay

Concerns over falling prices in the renewables market were quelled by Spanish solar provider SolarPack, who expressed that they have “very few doubts” in the long-term sustainability of renewables.

Questions have arisen from analysts and attendees at the CIREC conference in Santiago last week, asking about the availability of financing for projects such as Granja Solar, a 120 MW solar project SolarPack is set to build for its public clients. Aggressive bidding in Chile resulted in prices below the the market expectations of around US$80 per MWh and SolarPack recently set a record for the lowest price offered by solar at public auction. Inigo Malo de Molina, head of SolarPack’s operations in Chile and neighboring Peru, pointed out that the record has since been broken at an auction in Dubai.

SolarPack maintains that continuous price drops in technology allow companies to pass discounts onto consumers. Malo de Molina has said, “We feel very comfortable with the prices we have.”
