Solar PV system installed in Barbados under government’s new energy programme

A 109KW solar photovoltaic system was installed at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology in Barbados.

This renewable energy system was installed under the Government’s Public Sector Smart Energy Programme. The programme’s objective is to promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the public sector.

The contract was awarded to Solar Watt Systems Inc. through a public and international tender.

The Public Sector Smart Energy Programme is partly funded through grants from the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Union.

This move is concrete step to reaching the Government’s goal of Barbados becoming fully carbon neutral by 2030. This building is the latest public building to be fitted with solar PV systems.

“The estimated energy which will be produced from this system is over 200,000 KWh per year with an estimated revenue earning potential of $85,000 per year,” indicated Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams.
