SIDS launch second phase of initiative to accelerate energy transformation

The leaders of several Small Island Developing States (SIDS) gathered with development partners for a High-Level Roundtable at the UN Headquarters to discuss new options and initiatives to accelerate energy transformation and strengthen cooperation on renewable energy.

The Roundtable reviewed its Lighthouse Initiative, which “met its 2020 targets for installed capacity in renewable energy and funding three years ahead of schedule”.

The group also launched the Lighthouses Initiative 2.0 in cooperation with IRENA, and identified four priority areas: supporting SIDS in implementation and review of their nationally determined contributions, expanding the focus to include geothermal energy and energy from the ocean, enhancing support for development of bankable projects, and reinforcing work on the nexus between energy, agriculture, food, health and water.
