Puerto Rico’s governor bets on microgrids for island

“We want microgrids everywhere” said the governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló. This, he stated, will be part of the Energy 2.0 plan which will allow citizens to choose whether they want to be connected to the grid or not.

The Energy Plan 2.0 comes as an initiative to help modernize the island’s electrical grid by promoting the use of microgrids, renewable energy and energy storage. Energy 2.0 also aims to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and create a system which is more resilient and reliable. The governor wants to promote private investment for the island, and aims for a future of 40-45 percent of the total energy mix produced by renewable sources.

“We want to lower the costs. This is a major driver of economic growth,” said Rosselló. “We want distributed generation. We want microgrids everywhere within the island, and to promote alternatives.”
