Nicaragua’s electrification rates doubled in a decade

The Nicaraguan Ministry of Energy and Mines announced their electrification project reached 95% of national coverage. This project is part of the government’s strategy of restoring citizens’ rights by providing essential access to power and electricity. Before 2007, only 50% of households had an energy supply.

According to official figures, 64.4% of electricity is from renewable sources, whilst 35.6% comes from fossil fuels. By 2020, it is expected that 90% of Nicaragua’s energy could be generated by renewable energy.
