Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) authority says that over  80% of the more than 5,000 residential customers of New Providence have had electricity restored. Two teams each from PowerSecure and Caribbean Electricity Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) are working with local contractors and aim for a “full-restoration” by the end of the week.

Significant progress has been made in the hardest hit areas of the island, including Pinewood, Elizabeth Estates, Yellow Elder Gardens, and Marshall Road. Despite hopes for restoration, BPL explained that many customers will have issues with individual power supply, or power supply that affects a few streets. According to BPL, a home must be declared “water free” by a Ministry of Works electrical inspector before power is reconnected. The authority issued a statement explaining the procedure to be performed by a licensed electrician. Despite efforts, the company advised “there is the potential that some customers may not have their power restored right away.”
