Ministers welcome acquisition by Virgin Group of renewable energy company in Jamaica

The Ministers in Jamaica are enthusiastic about the acquisition of Blue Mountain Energy (BMR) by Virgin Group CEO Sir Richard Branson. Minister of science, energy and technology, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, supports the purchase as “the kinds of investments that can lead to even bigger and better things”. Minister of finance and public service, Audley Shaw, believes this to be a “win-win for everyone”, considering Jamaica’s ample resources and Branson’s track record of success. CEO of BMR, Bruce Levy, is confident that the 36.3 MW project will lead to economic prosperity for the Island and make Jamaica the indisputable leader in the region for renewables. Branson, for his part, has noted that it is not a return on investment that drew him to the project but rather, a chance to be part of the global push to be carbon-neutral by 2050.
