Mexico’s 3rd tender coming in April

After two successful tenders, Mexico will announce its third auction for power, capacity and clean energy certificates on April 28, said the head of the National Energy Control Centre (CENACE) as reported by Renewables Now.

The process is to be completed by mid-October, Eduardo Meraz Ateca said at a ceremony dedicated to the signing of contracts with winners in the second energy auction. Further details on the next competition are not yet available.

Enel Green Power, Engie and Fotowatio are in the list of winners in the second auction, the results of which were announced in September. Between the first and second auctions after the following the energy reform in Mexico, both held in 2016, the average prices dropped by 30% amid high competition.

At the Tuesday event, Energy Secretary Pedro Joaquin Coldwell said that 34 companies will pour USD 6.6 billion (EUR 6.2bn) into 52 green power projects in Mexico by 2019.

According to the Mexico Energy Outlook by the International Energy Agency (IEA), between now and 2040 renewables will account for more than 50% of the new power capacity installed in Mexico.
