Mexico selects 23 bidders for $4 billion renewable energy projects auction

Mexico has selected 23 bidders for contracts to build 36 new clean energy power plants including wind and solar capacity. The US $4 billion project will support PV solar, wind and other clean energy projects, awarding 8,909 GWh of capacity to the selected firms. Mexico’s National Energy Control Center (CENACE) has stated that the total capacity, which is 54% for PV plants and 43% for wind farms, accounts for approximately 3% of Mexico’s annual electricity generation. Building will take place over the next 3 years and electricity generated will be sold to state-owned utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) under long-term contracts. Those companies include: Acciona Energía, Iberdrola, Enel, Zuma Engie, and IEnova, among others. Acciona Energía, in a joint venture with Mexico’s Tuto Energy, received rights to supply 478 GHh of renewable energy and Mexico Energy Secretary Joaquín Coldwell confirmed that the second tender round received $33.47/MWh on average. Acciona said that the average bidding price represents 44.2% below the maximum price set by the CFE.
