LUCELEC welcomes hotel-generated renewables, decision lies with regulator

St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) and the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) are in agreement that hotels on the island could generate up to 20% of their electricity needs from their own renewable energy systems. Removing the current 25kW generating cap for systems could help the island in its transition to renewable energy, which has not been as swift as hoped due to various project delays for larger systems.

No decisions can be made by LUCELEC, however, as the decision lies with the National Utilities Regulatory Commission. LUCELEC maintains the importance of stakeholder collaboration in order to meet renewable energy goals. LUCELEC has been making important investments to get the national grid to a place where it can support the government’s renewable energy commitment of 35% of renewable resources by 2020.
