Jamaican Maritime Authority supports focus on Blue Economy

The Jamaican Maritime Authority has expressed its commitment to push for legislation governing the exploration and development of a sustainable blue economy.

The blue economy ensures that the resources of the ocean are used efficiently, to ensure the sustainability and production of different areas of a country’s economy, including shipping, tourism, commercial fishing, transport, and more.

“More than 90 per cent of trade in the Caribbean goes by sea, and in the case of Jamaica, that is more than 70 per cent of the value of trade”, said Rear Admiral Peter Brady Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, noting the importance of the commercial activities tied to Jamaica’s sea and maritime resources.

This announcement comes after Jamaica started the process of enacting the laws flowing from its signature of the International Maritime Organization’s treaties.

Rear Admiral Peter Brady also added that the Maritime Authority will be coordinating with the other States in the region on training and capacity-building of maritime administration.
