Grid upgrades and more renewables for Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic will be getting 1250 MW of new non-oil energy and significant upgrades to the electric distribution system in the next three years.

Executive VP of the Dominican Republic state energy holding company, CDEEE, Ruben Jiminez Bichara said he expects the new energy to come online, including 234 MW of wind, 172 MW of solar, and 10 MW of small hydro. The remaining MW will come from combined cycle conversion at a AES plant and 750 MW from the new Punta Catalina coal plant with estimated completion mid-2018.

The distribution grid currently has losses upwards of 30% and Bichara has aims to reduce these losses to 20.3% by 2020. Upgrades to the system will be financed with international investments totaling $296 million and state contributions of $200 million.
