Geothermal resource potential discovered in the north of Mexico

Off the coast of Los Cabos, scientists have discovered a site with high geothermal energy potential which could meet the electricity needs of both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. This discovery, made by scientists of the National Autonomous University (UNAM), consists of deep-sea deposits which contain hydrothermal vents off the southern coast of the State of Baja California Sur.

In total, the geothermal energy potential of this discovery could exceed 500 MW, however, the leading researcher Rosa María Prol, added that there could be other marine sites in the 1,200 km long peninsula that could also be exploited.
