Geothermal and digital interconnection hub project for Eastern Caribbean

Representatives from the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Saint-Barthélemy, Dutch St. Maarten and Saba were received by the President of the Collectivité of St. Martin to discuss the region’s potential for geothermal energy, and the need for an inter-island digital network.

The aim of the meeting was to establish concrete steps to implement this Electric and Digital Interconnection Project. This scheme is part of the European Interreg Caribbean Programme 2014-2020, and financed by the territorial cooperation programme.

This project focuses on the development of geothermal energy, and its production and distribution via a network integrating all the Leeward Islands. The digital component of the project will include the installation of optic fibres cables to create a resilient network infrastructure.

First steps will include a study on the available geothermal resources on the islands of Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Kitts, all located on the volcanic arc.

President of St. Martin, Daniel Gibbs stated: “It is our ambition that our territories, with dedicated tools, can become exemplary by developing research and development, particularly in the areas of the circular economy, renewable energies and digital technology.”
