Ecuador’s geothermal sector poised for growth

The General Manager of the Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (CELEC EP) along with Japanese Parliamentarians, recently reviewed the advances at the Chachimbiro Geothermal Project, located in the province of Imaburura.

This geothermal project is Ecuador’s first, and results thus far are encouraging. Drilling has reached a depth of 2,000 meters and the downhole temperature is higher than 200 degrees Celsius. The project is expected to have a generation capacity of 50 MW. Japan’s development agency, JICA, recommended CELEC EP should begin training the utility’s personnel in geology, geochemistry, and project management to prepare for the emerging geothermal industry.
