Cuba to install first solar PV park with foreign investment

Mariel Solar S.A. will be starting installation of a 102 GWh per year solar park, Cuba’s first PV installation with 100% foreign capital.

The park will be located in the Special Development Zone of Mariel, a commercial hub and port west of La Habana. It will comprise of over 300 000 panels on a zone covering 118 hectares.

Mariel Solar S.A. was the product of a closed tender by the state’s Unión Eléctrica Cuba given to British company Hive Energy in 2016. The project has been underway since, with contract negotiations, permits and authorisations, technical aspects, and financing all in order to start construction of the park this November.

The solar park project could become an important precedent and open the market to other foreign companies, forging the way to reach Cuba’s goal of 24% power generation by renewable energy sources by 2030.
