Contract awarded for 6MW energy storage project in Bonaire

Wärtsilä, a global leader in smart technologies in marine and energy markets, has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a 6MW hybrid energy storage project in the Caribbean island of Bonaire.

The island, part of the Netherlands Antilles, will see an integration of its generation assets, an increase in its use of wind and solar energies, as well as increased grid stability and reliability.

The project was commissioned by ContourGlobal Bonaire, a subsidiary of London-based ContourGlobal. Greensmith Energy, a Wärtsilä company, will provide the energy management software, GEMS, which will be essential in optimising energy storage, and can be integrated with a variety of renewable energy generation installations.

Wärtsilä’s “advanced energy storage and software platform will increase ContourGlobal’s wind power production and solar generation energy in Bonaire”, said Giorgio Narminio, COO at ContourGlobal.

Work on the project has already started, and its completion is expected in April of this year.
