Barbados – New Target Date Set for Reduction in Energy Use

Barbados moves targeted date for a 20% reduction in energy use forward.

CREF 2015 speaker Senator the Honorable Darcy Boyce spoke this week at the Smart Energy Barbados event about a revision to Barbados’ plan to reduce electricity use, which currently costs the government $ Barbados 100 million or approximately USD $ 50 million annually.

While the Office of the Prime Minister had previously aimed to reduce energy use by 20% by 2029, Boyce announced that the goal has been changed and that the government now plans to hit that target by 2020. Speaking at the event, he said

We have a vested interest in reducing that and our target for the country as a whole is to reduce the use of electricity by about 22 per cent. We had previously said 22 per cent reduction of electricity usage by 2029. I have asked my officers to bring that forward, I believe that 2020 is a much better time to achieve that target

In his remarks, Boyce also announced the establishment of a task force to review the National Sustainable Energy Policy.
