Barbados government to implement more incentives for electric and green vehicles

With over 30% of Barbados’ total energy use utilised by the transportation sector, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Mr. Wilfred Abrahams, sees it as a critical sector to develop to successfully reach the country’s 2030 goal of 100% renewable energy.

Mr. Abrahams announced his ministry was developing a hybrid/ electric bus programme, and that the government was looking for ways to further incentivise the growth of the sector. These include the government itself purchasing over eight electric vehicles, and the establishment of a ministerial committee on energy.

These plans were accompanied by the announcement that Barbados is now the highest user of electric vehicles in the world, in terms of electric vehicles per 1000 people.
