Dr. Jorge Marcial Islas Samperio is a physicist, holds a Master’s degree in Energy Engineering from UNAM, and a PhD in Energy Economics from the University of Grenoble Alpes. His research has focused on the areas of Renewable Energy Prospects, Climate Change Mitigation, Energy Transition, and Sustainable Bioenergy Use.
He was Head of the Energy Systems Department, Academic Secretary and Postgraduate Coordinator at IER UNAM; Scientific Manager of the Energy Area of the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development and Social Advisor of the Coordination of Evaluation of the National Climate Change Policy.
He has published 50 scientific articles, 5 books, 18 book chapters, and 19 intellectual property registrations, and has led 28 research projects. He is a member of the Academy of Engineering and a visiting professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, France, and at the Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research in Spain; he is a Level 2 member of the National System of Researchers, and a Senior Researcher (Level C) and a PRIDE D researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
His research has had a significant impact on the formulation of public policies related to the Energy Transition. The publication of his book, Towards a Low-Carbon Mexican Energy System, is a national reference work on the decarbonization of the Mexican economy. Throughout his extensive career, he directed two postdoctoral research projects and 25 undergraduate theses; he participated in the creation of the Bachelor’s Degree in Renewable Energy Engineering and in the conversion of the Energy Research Center into the Renewable Energy Institute at UNAM; he taught 78 semester-long university courses at UNAM; he conducted more than 303 outreach and dissemination activities; and he coordinated the Energy panel in the Dialogues for Transformation for then-candidate Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
