Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma obtained a B.Sc. in Physics in 1975 at the Sciences School (UNAM), and a Ph.D. in Physics-Mathematical Sciences in 1981 at the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences USSR. In 1986 she obtained the Diploma on Energy Technology from the Geothermal Institute (Auckland University, NZ). In 1981, she was awarded a position as researcher in the Institute of Geophysics UNAM, where Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma continues working presently.
Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma has been a member of the National Researchers System (NRS) since 1984, presently Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma holds the highest level (III), and in 2001 Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma was accepted as a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and in 2018 of the Mexican Academy of Engineering.
She was a visiting sabbatical scholar at Harvard University-USA (Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences), Auckland University, New Zealand (Geothermal Institute and Geology Department), and University of Barcelona, Spain (Facultad de Geología).
Her projects have been supported by the European Union, CONACYT, Mexican Energy Ministry, DGAPA-UNAM, and CFE, most of them were focused on natural resources exploration. Presently, Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma works on Geothermal exploration projects in collaboration with the European Union as part of the Consortium GEMEX.
Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma has published 99 papers in SCI journals; 1 book, 8 book chapters, three maps and 42 reviewed extended abstracts. Her papers have received more than 2300 citations. Particularly, her paper: Prol-Ledesma, R. M., Canet, C., Torres-Vera, M.A., Forrest, M.J., and Armienta, M.A., 2004, Vent fluid chemistry in Bahía Concepción coastal submarine hydrothermal system, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 137, p 311-328, received the award for “Most Cited Author 2003-2007”.
Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma has been an advisor to 55 students (38 B. Sc, and B. Eng.; 14 M. Sc. and 3 PhD) in the Science and Engineering Schools at UNAM, ESDra. IA-Dra. IPN, and the Graduate Programs in Geophysics, Earth Science and Ocean Sciences (UNAM). She teaches regularly in undergraduate and graduate programs in Science and Engineering. Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma coordinated the on-line course Introduction to Geothermal in Coursera (in Spanish) that has more than 18,000 registered students from more than 70 different countries. Additionally, she has lectured short courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and the Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala, with UNESCO support, and coordinated short courses on Natural Resources exploration and Management of mining waste, the XXV UNESCO-SEG-SGA Latin-American course on Metallogeny, and the Geothermal Exploration Course in Los Azufres geothermal field in cooperation with the United Nations University-Iceland.
In addition to research and lecturing, Dra. Rosa María Prol Ledesma has worked on dissemination of science and she has published 6 papers and one book “The Heat of the Earth” in the collection “Science for everyone” (Ed. Fondo de Cultura Económica).
