Richard Paal studied Mechanical Engineering and Project Management and holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). He has more than 25 years experience in Engineering, Project Management and Construction Supervision of Projects in the oil-, water- mining and utilities industry.

From 1997 to 2005 Richard worked for an engineering company Concordia Consultants & Engineers, Suriname as Mechanical Engineer and project manager. From 2005 to 2011 Richard worked for Hatch, LAC, Suralco, Suriname in the position of Mechanical Engineer, Project Team Lead and Site Office Manager.

As of 2011 Richard works for the national electricity company from Suriname (EBS) as Engineering Manager, and has the responsibility for the delivery of the company’s capital plan. In 2013 Richard also assumed the role of Program Manager on an IDB financed program executed by the electricity company, in which several rural electrification components, including one solar mini-gird in a remote location in Suriname were included.

Richard is currently also the project manager for an EU/IDB financed project in which 10 solar mini-grids are being constructed in Suriname South America. This project will provide 24 hours per day, 7 days a week electricity access to 12 villages in rural areas along the upper Suriname river.
