Bermuda College for the Youth Mental Health Plan
Chief Researcher
Dr. Daniel (Dan) Cavanagh is an acclaimed Australian researcher, educator, and leading expert in youth mental health policy. He is best known for spearheading the groundbreaking National Adolescent Mental Health Survey in Bermuda—a landmark initiative that assessed thousands of local students and laid the foundational data for the island’s official Youth Mental Health Plan.
Dr. Cavanagh’s unique perspective bridges the gap between frontline education and high-level academic research. He began his career as a high school teacher at Bermuda’s Warwick Academy, an experience that directly fueled his passion for student well-being. He later transitioned into academia, coordinating student leadership programs at the University of Melbourne’s Trinity College and leading rugged youth expeditions along the historic Kokoda Trail.
He completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing. Dr. Cavanagh’s internationally recognized, peer-reviewed research tackles the critical barriers to youth mental health, focusing heavily on mental health literacy, stigma reduction, and help-seeking behaviors among teenagers. A passionate community advocate, he frequently collaborates with clinical psychologists, schools, and non-profit organizations to translate complex data into actionable, community-led intervention strategies.
