Uruguay to export wind energy to Argentina

Wind farm developer Ventus and Argentinian energy trader, Saesa, have signed a deal to export electricity through their respective energy companies. As Uruguay’s wind sector expands, with total capacity expected to hit 1.2GW by the end of 2016, the opportunity to trade with Latin American neighbor has become even more promising.

Argentina has a deep power deficit; only 8 MW of new wind capacity was installed in 2015, taking the country’s total to 279 MW. Ventus currently owns 70 MW of wind capacity in operation or under construction, and the deal with Argentina would help some large energy consumers fulfill corporate mandates to source electricity from renewable sources. Energy produced by wind turbines in Uruguay is competitive against the mix of conventional power generation that dominates supply in Argentina. Saesa president, Juan Bosch, says: “There are some who claim that renewable energy cannot compete on price, but we are convinced that it can.”
