Update on St. Kitts & Nevis geothermal projects

At a regional CARICOM-sponsored geothermal meeting, Energy Minister Ian Patches Liburd announced that St. Kitts and Nevis are pursuing separate geothermal exploration projects.

“The federation of St Kitts and Nevis as a destination is therefore self sufficient in opportunities for solar, wind and geothermal powered development. For that reason as a responsible administration it is not our intention to rely much longer on expensive and less environmentally friendly sources of energy.  As countries within the OECS and beyond we face a common challenge that we are heavily dependent upon the use of fuel oil to generate electricity.  Having greater access to cleaner, affordable energy we believe can only translate into reduced costs for the hotel and manufacturing sectors and other businesses and ultimately and most importantly for the consumers. It will stimulate economic growth and reduce socio-economic problems.”
