Unlocking aviation’s benefits in Latin America and Caribbean

The aviation industry in Latin America and the Caribbean (LCR) can support economic development in the region through job creation and planned infrastructure. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passenger demand will more than double between the years of 2015 and 2035, thus creating 3 million jobs over that period and contributing US$204 billion to regional GDP.

IATA Director-General and CEO Alexandre de Juniac has urged regional governments to address fiscal and regulatory issues that could stalwart the process. Operational costs, high taxes and regulations not aligned with global standards could negatively impact the benefit of growth in aviation industries. Juniac noted the importance of public-private partnerships in planning infrastructure, saying that “airlines, airports and governments need to be partners to build cost-efficient infrastructure in line with market realities on cost and capacity.” If aviation is to be another driver of economic growth in LCR, it will be important to focus on long-term growth via infrastructure concessions and to focus on the benefits of regional connectivity.
