The Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, has argued that the decision to move towards a diversified energy economy has made Jamaica less susceptible to the volatility of oil prices in the global market.
The minster stated that new LNG, wind and solar projects will provide a total of 410 megawatts of alternative energy to the country’s national grid by March; energy which was primarily being produced by fossil fuels in the past.
This is more than half of the electricity demand through the Jamaica Public Service (JPS), which amounts to over 700 megawatts of energy.
All of this comes in addition to 100 megawatts of wind and solar power now in the system.
