St. Lucia starts construction of first solar electric vehicle charging facility

A press release announced St. Lucia has started construction of a 54kW solar PV electric vehicle port system with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The construction of the facility, located in the parking lot of the Department of Infrastructure Ports and Energy, is led by Gearing Up Ltd, who won the contract through a competitive procurement procedure.

This project is the first of its kind and a positive signal from the Government that electric vehicles in St. Lucia are the way forward. 

Financed by the Italian Governemnt, this projects is fruit of a Memorandum of Understanding which aims to build cooperation to further the CARICOM region’s climate change mitigation and adaption goals.

The project was met with positive responses. Terrence Gilliard, Head of the Renewable Energy Division said the project is an important step for achieving the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution targets set after the Paris Agreement. Kurt Inglis, Public Utilities Officer in St. Lucia added that this project provides tangible evidence of the benefits of renewable energy.

The Solar Carport Facility is expected to enter into commission by July 2019.
