Scotland just produced enough wind energy to power it for an entire day

Blustery weather in Scotland is making a case for wind-power and other forms of renewable energy in the country. On August 7th, stormy weather enabled wind turbines to create 106 percent of the total electricity demand used by homes and businesses. This outcome empowered WWF Scotland Director, Lang Banks, to push the Scottish government to commit to a new target of supplying half of Scotland’s energy needs from renewables by 2030. Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) conducted a study last year proving that wind power generates the cheapest electricity in the UK and Germany; the UK now generates 25 percent from renewable sources. The fact that Scotland was able to produce 39 MW of electricity in one day shows tremendous promise for wind energy, and also for solar power. The Government released a statement saying that Scotland has a clear policy for an energy mix that provides energy security to the region, but that decisions at the UK level have been damaging to the industry. Scotland itself is in full support of low-carbon technologies and sees renewable energy generation as a great economic opportunity for the country.
