Montserrat: geothermal will boost economy

The Head of Government Business in Montserrat, Premier Donaldson Romeo, state that he hopes spin-off industries will be born from local geothermal production. During a telephone interview from Miami with ZJB Radio on Wednesday, Premier Romeo said:

“In the very area are where the production would be located, there is a possibility for companies who use the scheme to exist side by side, …. I look forward to the day when we will be shipping out products where we add value to this massive tonnage of materials that come out of the volcano.”

The island is preparing to drill a third well with funding from the UK Government, via the UK Department for International Development (DFID). An allotment of EC$17.6 million (US $6.5m) will finance this third venture. In 2013, two other wells were drilled and evaluations concluded that the maximum yield would be about 1.5 MW per well. In 2014, the DFID hosted a geothermal workshop, bringing together stakeholders to raise awareness about and discuss the spin-offs that can derive from geothermal.
