JPS gets $50-m grant for smart LED streetlight project

New LED streetlights will illuminate much of Jamaica starting in December 2016. An agreement between to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) and the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will include the conversion of 105,000 streetlights from High Pressure Sodium to Light Emitting Diode (LED); a J$50 million grant from USTDA will fund the project.

JPS President & CEO Kelly Tomblin said, “When we say we are leading an energy revolution, we mean that in every way. … This is the beginning of a new level of energy efficiency and service for all our stakeholders.” US Ambassador to Jamaica Luis Moreno also sees the project as a significant step for the Caribbean nation and believes that the lights will add an element of safety to the social environment. The USTDA’s grant will also be used to assist with vendor supply systems, environmental impact assessments and other technical aspects of the project.
