Puerto Rico’s first community solar grid to be built

Adjuntas, in Puerto Rico, will have the island’s first community solar grid.

Residents and industry will become independent of the national grid, with the first community network of generation, storage, and distribution of solar energy.

Over 18,500 people in the community will benefit from this solar energy project, led by Casa Pueblo and the Honnold Foundation, with collaboration from EV company Rivian and Empowered by Light.

In the initial phase of this project, 600 solar panels and state-of-the-art lithium batteries will be installed, financed by micro-investors.

This project will lower costs for energy, and all profits will be put towards a fund for maintenance and repair of the solar installation, as well as a support fund for low-income families of Adjuntas.

Alex Honnold, founder of the Honnold Foundation, said “I think this project has the potential to be a model for communities across the country”.
