El Salvador Geothermal: Drilling Starts on Well for 10 MW Power Plant

El Salvador geothermal takes another step forward.

The government of El Salvador announced that drilling at the Chinameca geothermal site started this week.

The well will produce an estimated 8 – 10 MW of energy by 2017. By 2019, the site will produce 50 MW annually. According to Comisión Ejecutiva Hidreléctrica del Río Lempa, David Antonio Lopez, the drilling of the first wells will cost approximately $7.5 million USD.

The announcement of drilling comes several weeks after the government of El Salvador announced the auction of 150 MW of renewable projects as well as a training course to prepare professionals to enter the geothermal industry.
