27% renewables for Dominican Republic?

National Energy Commission (CNE) director Juan Rodriguez Nina sees renewable energy growth in the Dominican Republic to leap to more than a quarter of the national energy matrix in 2018.

Adding to the two large scale plants inaugurated this year – 30MW San Pedro Bioenergy Plant and 50MW Larimar Wind Farm – Rodriguez Nina anticipates another 50MW facility, expansion of Monte Plata facility to 80 MW, and more wind farms to be built by mid-2018. Add in existing hydroelectric generation already at 15%, and this will meet the country’s goal of 25% by 2025 with time to spare.

“Some (of the projects) already have their final concession and are in the process of financing”, said Rodriguez Nina. “That is to say that we expect that once everything is completed, the country will have around 615 to 620 MW of renewable energy.”

Rodriguez Nina continues, “This means that we will have exceeded what we undertook under Law 57-07 and the Paris Summit on Climate Change held in November 2015, to having 25% of the matrix in renewable energy.”
