Saint Lucia Leading on Climate Change

St. Lucia stepped into a big role at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) that took place outside of Paris, last week. The responsibility to lead CARICOM negotiations was assigned to the Country because Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony is the CARICOM lead head of government on Climate Change. At the forefront of the negotiations is Minister for Public Service, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology, Dr. James Fletcher. The esteem with which St. Lucia is considered is related to Dr. Fletcher’s position that global warming should be kept below 1.5 degrees celsius – a perspective shared by the Association of Small Islands (AOSIS) and now being championed by a growing number of developing countries. Coining the phrase “1.5 to stay alive”, Dr. Fletcher said: “It’s a fight that really should not be focused on numbers, 1.5, 2, 2.5. It should be focused on lives. We’re not fighting for numbers; we’re fighting for lives.
